I started with the Wilton 3D Football pan. That was the bottom layer. Which I chopped off the back end of, and tapered the front a bit more. Then I baked another cake in a 11X16, so it was thinner. Then cut out the shapes I neede and layered them on top. I had yellow icing leftover from a batch of cupcakes, so that's what I used for my layers and crumb coat.

The ouside layer of icing was just chocolate and i used black licorice for the detailing which meant almost zero food coloring needed this time.

The masts were Bamboo skewers and the sails were printed off at hp.com. They have a pirate party kit there with a ship that you can print out and fold into a ship, so I just used the sails.

The cupcakes were iced in blue for the water around the ship and topped with shark gummies.
The Cupcakes were for the kids only party in the afternoon and the ship cake was served after supper at the family party with aunts, uncles and grandparents.

This is the recipe I used for the cake and cupcakes. It makes a nice moist, and a little more stable cake for shaping. And it's really yummy!
1 boxed cake mix
1 instant pudding
3 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup oil
Mix on low until combined, then on high for 2 minutes. Following baking instructions on cake mix box.
For the icing, I use the buttercream recipe on the Roger's Icing Sugar bag.
